MY STORY
Creativity is key in Innovation.
JANZI instrument stands as a landmark in modern African ethnomusicology, illustrating how cultural heritage can be reimagined through technical innovation. Born from the vision of musician Ssewa Ssewa, the instrument addresses a historical gap: the need for a uniquely Ugandan identity in the global orchestral landscape.
The Spark of Innovation
Following his international tours, Ssewakiryanga James a.k.a Ssewa Ssewa observed that Ugandan traditional instruments often lacked the standardized recognition afforded to Western counterparts. He took inspiration from the Adungu—a traditional arched harp of the Alur people—and engineered a completely new acoustic architecture.
Technical Breakthrough
JANZI’s primary innovation lies in its dual-neck design, which allows it to bridge different musical worlds:
-
Dual-Scale Tuning: It features two separate sets of strings, one tuned to a Diatonic scale and the other to a Pentatonic scale.
- Versatility: This configuration allows the player to perform complex harmonies and switch between traditional African rhythms and contemporary Western melodies seamlessly.
